Skellig Michael is one of Ireland's most extraordinary heritage sites, located 11.6 kilometres off the Kerry coast. This rocky island rises 218 metres above the Atlantic and is home to one of the world's best-preserved early Christian monastic settlements.
History: Founded between 6th-8th centuries by monks seeking spiritual isolation. Raided by Vikings in 823 and 838 AD. Continuously occupied until 12th-13th century. Featured as Luke Skywalker's exile location in Star Wars films.
