Cahir Castle stands on a rocky island in the River Suir. Built in 1142, it was granted to the Butler family in 1375 and is one of Ireland's largest medieval fortifications.

History: Built in 1142, granted to Butlers in 1375, survived 1599 siege by Earl of Essex, surrendered to Cromwell in 1650.

Significance: One of Ireland's largest and best-preserved medieval castles with a functioning portcullis.
